How Jane’s AI Scribe is Helping Me Reclaim My Time (and My Creativity) as a Therapist
Therapists wear a lot of hats, clinician, admin, scheduler, billing department, professional lunch-skipper, documentation machine... and that’s before we even get to the emotional labor.
So when Jane, my faaaavorite practice management software (that I already use and love), rolled out their new AI Scribe feature, I was immediately curious.
As someone balancing a caseload and running a creative business that supports other therapists (plus a few too many side projects 🤪), I’m always looking for ways to work smarter, not harder. And let me tell you, Jane’s AI Scribe is a breath of fresh air when it comes to documentation.
What is Jane’s AI Scribe (and why it’s not the scary kind of AI)
Using Jane’s AI Scribe is refreshingly simple:
✅ Get informed consent
✅ Record or upload your session
✅ Let AI Scribe create a draft note (SOAP, DAP, or your own format)
From there, you can replay, transcribe, download, or delete recordings and it is all securely managed right inside Jane.
And the best part? What makes it not scary AI?
👉 It’s not a learning model. Your client’s data stays private and is never used to train the feature.
The Question Every Therapist Should Ask: Is It Safe?
As therapists, it’s our ethical responsibility to protect our clients’ data, and that includes making intentional choices about the tools we use behind the scenes. Our documentation practices should reflect the same care and professionalism we bring into the room.
At the Jane Ambassador Retreat this past May, I had the opportunity to attend an in-depth presentation all about Jane’s AI Scribe. Afterward, I was able to ask the team directly about privacy, HIPAA compliance, and data security concerning AI Scribe. In full transparency, I was a little nervous at first. There’s been a lot of buzz (and valid concern) about AI in healthcare, especially within the therapy space.
Here’s what reassured me:
🛠️ Jane built AI Scribe in-house with intention and integrity
🔒 It's not a learning feature, meaning your data isn't used to train Jane's features
🧠 Everything is encrypted, ethically managed, and fully under your control
It was clear from that conversation (alongside all of my other experiences with Jane) that privacy isn’t just a checkbox for the Jane team, it’s a core value. That gave me the peace of mind I needed to move forward with confidence.
The Real-Life Impact
AI Scribe isn’t about replacing your clinical voice, it’s a tool that helps you get a head start. You still review and finalize everything. But knowing I can sit down, upload a session, and get a clear draft ready to go in minutes? That’s a huge gift.
It’s helped me stay more present with clients, and more present in my own life (which includes running a business, making art, being creative, and occasionally remembering to eat lunch before 3pm).
I also deeply value my own creative thinking as a clinical tool, it’s part of what makes this work meaningful, individualized, and deeply human. What I love about AI Scribe is that it doesn’t erase that, it actually creates more space for it.
Because I’m not spending so much time reinventing the wheel or reconstructing every session, I can approach documentation with more intention. I get to reflect, connect themes, and think about what the session meant, not just what happened. Instead of burning out on the basics, I can bring that creative part of my brain into my notes and into the next session.
So, Is It Magic? No. But It’s Pretty Close.
AI Scribe won’t replace your clinical insight, and it shouldn’t. But it does offer a solid, thoughtful draft in just a few clicks, so you can spend less time spinning your wheels and more time being the incredible, multifaceted therapist you are.
For me, that means more space to run creative workshops, connect with other helpers, and maybe even end my day on time (or at least before dinner).
